The End of Yugoslavia

Yugoslav collapse and wars which occurred at its territory are one of the focal points of the Center. We started back in 2010 by publishing documents indispensable for understanding this process. Most of those are now digitally accessible. Before delving into the documents, you might consider our textbook material on the Yugoslav crisis, watching a classic documentary The Death of Yugoslavia, plus newer, much shorter visual contributions such as The Balkans in Flames or How to Destroy a State. You can also take a look at the extensive Radio Free Europe interviews with the participants, consult the selection of wartime photos or partake in our trainings for using the documents of the Hague Tribunal. Consider attending our intro lecture and exploring course material on this subject, as well as its virtual map and interactive game. Also, if you are passing through Belgrade, make sure to visit The Labyrinth of the Nineties museum.

On the basis of this material, we also did a number of studies about different aspects of the Yugoslav conflict:

Sources are not only digitized, but also partially virtualized in a project Yugoslav Spiral of Violence: March 1991.

We firmly believe that digital projects, both ours and those made by others, such as The Yugoslav Wars using Google Earth, enhance understanding of these traumatic events, especially of a generation born after them. We are also very committed to fostering a constructive regional dialogue about causes and consequences of Yugoslav catastrophe,

We also believe that this war was not only tragic, but also avoidable. Hence, as the next step of immersion, together with Sense Agency we piloted am interactive game Between Scylla and Charybdis: Yugoslavia 1991. which puts you in a role of last Yugoslav prime minister during the peak of the crisis.

Should you need to get into the role, feel free to consult textbook material on the development Yugoslav crisis or read the transcript of testimony of Ante Marković at the Milošević trial or its video summary, as well as his efforts to secure support for the country which was falling deeper and deeper into dysfunction . In the course of the game you can also consult original documents and learn about the power dynamics.

Further plans of the Center in this field are outlined in a recent address of Vladimir Petrovic in Ljubljana, as we seek to enhance our partnership in 2025 in order to work collaboratively during the year which marks 30 years from Srebrenica, Oluja and Deyton peace agreement. In the next step, you can partake with your comments in making of the book The Serbs and the Yugoslav Collapse: From War and Peace to Crime and Punishment.
