July 2026: Vladimir Petrovic at Historicizing the International Tribunals workshop in Munich

A dynamic workshop devoted to a historical examination of the tensions between universalism and particularism in the work of international tribunals of the 1990s was convened in Munich by Dr Alexa Stiller from University of Bern. The purpose of the gathering was to address the possibilities of historicization of ICTY, ICTR, ICC and other international criminal bodies which emerged during this dynamic decade. Vladimir Petrovic examined the possibilities of finding a reliable yardstick for assessing the activity of the ICTY.The contributions of experts from different disciplines offered a number of ideas on launching research in that direction but was also highlighting a number of challenges along this way. A relative absence of primary material on foundation and operation of the tribunals, as well as the lack of readiness to discuss their activity critically seems to be the biggest deterrent. Yet, synergic character of the contributions indicated that the time is right to launch exactly such kind of research agenda, in order to gain better insights into both past and present attempts at rendering justice on an international level.
