May 2025: Hosting Nobel prize laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk, Ukrainian human rights activist

CISI head Vladimir Petrovic, together with Professor Nanci Adler from University of Amsterdam hosted Oleksandra Matviichuk, the director of the Center for Civic Liberties from Ukraine, a recipient of 2022 Nobel prize. Matviichuk opened a meeting with students of NIOD’s MA program in Holocaust and Genocide studies with a moving speech about the scope of destruction in Ukraine and crimes directed against civilian population. Engaging them in a conversation about the importance of credible evidence about war crimes, she also pointed out to the challenges of its collection during wartime. She emphasized the weaknesses in an international legal order, which is still not able to prevent crimes of aggression, has warned about the danger of return to barbarity and indicated the need to confront this tendency across the board. Matviichuk came to Amsterdam to deliver a Never Again Memorial Lecture organized by NIOD and the Dutch Auschwitz Committee.
